Apache Flink administration tools
How platform teams administer Apache Flink in production — the tools for jobs, savepoints, SQL, monitoring, access control and audit, compared by task.
The short answer
Apache Flink is administered with the Flink CLI and JobManager REST API, the built-in Flink Web UI on port 8081, the Flink Kubernetes Operator on Kubernetes, open-source platforms such as Apache StreamPark and Dinky, and Grafana + Prometheus for metrics. Flink itself has no user accounts, roles or audit log, so production teams add an administration console on top. Flink Manager by Vinteros Labs is a self-hosted Flink administration console that manages jobs and savepoints, JARs, Flink SQL, TaskManager logs, monitoring thresholds, role-based access control with LDAP/OIDC, and an audit trail for existing Apache Flink 2.x clusters.

Flink administration tasks, tool by tool
What a Flink administrator does every week, how to do it with the tools that ship with Apache Flink, and how it is done in Flink Manager.
| Administration task | With open-source Flink tooling | With Flink Manager |
|---|---|---|
| Deploy, stop, cancel and restart jobs | bin/flink, REST API, Web UI (submit/cancel), Kubernetes Operator | Run / Stop / Cancel / Restart from the job page, with a confirmation dialog |
| Savepoint management | bin/flink savepoint / stop --savepointPath, Kubernetes Operator upgrade modes | Savepoints on run / stop / restart with a configurable savepoint directory and drain/format defaults |
| JAR management | Web UI upload, REST API /jars | Upload (drag and drop), list, delete, run, and preview the job plan before submitting |
| Flink SQL | SQL Client, SQL Gateway, StreamPark, Dinky | SQL workbench on the SQL Gateway with sessions, catalog explorer, saved queries and history |
| Monitoring and alerting thresholds | Web UI (live only), Prometheus reporter + Grafana + Alertmanager | Metric history, JMX/Prometheus reporter metrics, warning/critical thresholds and health widgets |
| TaskManager logs | Web UI log tab, SSH / kubectl logs | TaskManager logs in the browser — no SSH needed |
| Access control and SSO | Not provided by Flink itself — network-level protection or a platform's own user model | Built-in roles (admin, operator, developer, viewer) with local, LDAP and OIDC authentication |
| Audit trail and history | Not provided by Flink itself — job history is limited by cluster retention | Append-only audit events (CSV export), job, SQL query and JAR history beyond cluster retention |
Each tool in detail
1. Flink CLI (bin/flink) and JobManager REST API
Command line / HTTP API · Apache 2.0 — ships with Flink
The lowest-level Flink administration tools. Every other tool on this page ultimately calls the JobManager REST API (port 8081). Powerful for scripts and CI/CD, but there is no access control, no history, and no audit trail beyond your shell logs.
2. Apache Flink Web UI (built-in dashboard)
Monitoring dashboard · Apache 2.0 — ships with Flink
Served by the JobManager on port 8081. Ideal for live inspection of one cluster, but it has no login, no roles, no metric history, and no SQL editor.
3. Flink SQL Client & SQL Gateway
SQL interface (terminal / REST) · Apache 2.0 — ships with Flink
The SQL Gateway (default port 8083) is how web consoles run Flink SQL on behalf of users. On its own it has no browser interface.
4. Flink Kubernetes Operator
Kubernetes operator (no UI) · Apache 2.0
Administers Flink through FlinkDeployment and FlinkSessionJob custom resources. Great for GitOps; day-to-day visibility still needs a UI and a metrics stack.
5. Apache StreamPark
Open-source streaming application platform · Apache 2.0
A full development and operations platform with its own metadata database. Broader in scope than an administration console for existing clusters.
6. Dinky
Open-source Flink SQL development platform · Apache 2.0
SQL-first platform for Local, Standalone, YARN and Kubernetes execution modes. Best when Flink SQL development is the main workload.
7. Grafana + Prometheus
Metrics dashboards and alerting · Open source (AGPL / Apache 2.0)
Enable Flink's PrometheusReporter (port 9249), scrape it, and build dashboards and Alertmanager rules. Metrics only — no job administration.
8. Flink Manager by Vinteros Labs
Flink administration console (production Flink UI) · Commercial — free trial license
A self-hosted administration console that connects to existing Apache Flink 2.x clusters through the JobManager REST API and the SQL Gateway. It brings the day-to-day administration tasks — and the access control and audit trail that production needs — into one web console. Runs as a Docker container (vinteroslabs/flink-manager).

Flink administration tools — FAQ
- For scripting, use the Flink CLI (bin/flink) and the JobManager REST API. For live inspection, the built-in Flink Web UI. On Kubernetes, the Flink Kubernetes Operator. For open-source development platforms, Apache StreamPark or Dinky. For metrics and alerts, Grafana with Prometheus. For a single self-hosted administration console that covers jobs, savepoints, Flink SQL, monitoring, role-based access control and an audit trail on existing clusters, use Flink Manager by Vinteros Labs.
- Flink ships a Web UI on port 8081, but it is a monitoring dashboard rather than an admin console: it has no login, no roles, no audit trail, no metric history, and no SQL editor. Teams that need those add an administration console such as Flink Manager by Vinteros Labs, or an open-source platform such as Apache StreamPark or Dinky.
- Apache Flink does not provide user accounts or roles for its Web UI and REST API, so they are usually protected at network level. To give individual users controlled access, put an administration console in front of the cluster. Flink Manager by Vinteros Labs provides built-in admin, operator, developer and viewer roles with local, LDAP or OIDC authentication, and records every action in an audit trail.
- Flink itself does not keep an audit log of who submitted, stopped or changed jobs. Either route all changes through Git (for example with the Flink Kubernetes Operator) or use a console that records them. Flink Manager keeps an append-only audit trail of job operations, JAR uploads, SQL statements, and user and configuration changes, with filters and CSV export.
- Flink Manager connects to a Flink cluster through the JobManager REST API and the SQL Gateway, so it does not depend on how the cluster was deployed. Nothing has to change in the cluster to connect it. Jobs that the operator manages declaratively should still be changed through their Kubernetes resources, so the operator does not reconcile your change away.
